Cartier Exhibition in Paris at the Grand Palais

Cartier exhibition in Paris , “Cartier: Style and History”, runs at the Grand Palais until February 16th. The sheer dazzling brilliance of the jewellery has often obscured the fascinating history of this world renowned design house. This new exhibition will address this by displaying pieces ranging from the ceremonial to the personal, while setting it all in within the context of history. The story of the Jeweller To Kings is an enthralling one and is highly recommended by the Vice Versa Hotel , where our hallmark of slightly sinful luxury reflects the sparkle to be seen at the Grand Palais. Cartier exhibition in Paris

Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis Francois Cartier, the Maison Cartier rapidly established a reputation for fine craftsmanship and design, spanning Art Nouveau to Art Deco and beyond. Their tasteful and stylish creations have adorned iconic figures from the Duchess of Windsor and Marlene Dietrich to Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and various maharajas. Indeed, the royal connections have been profound, with Cartier winning royal warrants from the U.K., Spain, Russia, Greece and many other nations.

The 600 pieces on show are mainly from the Cartier collection, but this is also supplemented by items on loan from both public institutions and private collections, including that of the Prince of Monaco. The jewellery, clocks, watches and other artifacts are shown along with clothing, accessories, furniture, paintings, photographs and fashion magazines to give the flavour of the times from 1847 onwards and provide context. There are also some 200 preparatory drawings and designs, plus archival documents to give some idea of the story behind the scenes. The Beaux Arts architectural style and ornate decorations of the Grand Palais surely provide the most fitting of backdrops for this scintillant show.
